What is a Thallium Scan Test?
A Thallium Scan test measures the blood flow to the heart. It is a nuclear imaging test that detects blood flow to the heart both during activity and at rest. A small amount of the radiotracer thallium is injected into the patient via an IV. This tracer acts as a dye, helping to enhance the imaging of the heart. After that, the cardiologist visualises the blood flow to the heart using a specialised gamma camera.

This test helps detect areas of the heart with reduced blood flow, which may indicate coronary artery disease (CAD). It is a crucial tool for evaluating heart function and supporting accurate treatment planning. Thallium stress tests generally use a small amount of radiation. The minimal risk associated with this scan—comparable to that of a standard CT scan—is far outweighed by the valuable diagnostic information it provides. Rest assured, a doctor carefully reviews each request to ensure the scan is appropriate and necessary for your specific condition.
The thallium perfusion scan test is not safe for pregnant women due to the risk of radiation exposure. So, it is generally not recommended for them. If a test is necessary for pregnant women, then radiologists take special measures to avoid any risk to the mother and child.
Thallium Scan at Al-Nasar
Lab & Diagnostic Centre
Al-Nasar Lab & Diagnostic Centre utilises an advanced dual-head gamma camera by Siemens for Thallium Scan tests in Lahore. We have done thousands of successful thallium perfusion scans reported by the senior professor of Cardiovascular Imaging trained in the U.S.A.
The procedure of the Thallium Scan test is as follows:
- To get accurate results, you will be asked to fast for at least 4 to 6 hours before the test.
- After that, our radiologist will administer a radiotracer.
- Patients lie for 15 to 45 minutes.
- The gamma camera will detect the dyed blood and take high-resolution images.
- The blood flow will be detected during exercise or the active phase.
- For this, you will be asked to walk on a treadmill with electrodes attached to your chest, arms, and legs. The radiologist will monitor the blood flow to the heart.
- A specific medication will be given to you if you are unable to exercise. The medicine increases the heart rate. This stimulates the heart's reaction during exercise.
- The gamma camera will take images of the heart.
- After the test, our senior cardiologists will compare the images from the resting and active stages to evaluate your heart health.
- The procedure generally takes 3 to 4 hours. The report is ready within 24 hours.
