What is a CT scan?
Computerised tomography, also known as a CT scan, is a widely used diagnostic imaging technology. A CT scan uses X-ray techniques to create clear and detailed cross-sectional images of your organs, bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels. This scan is generally safer than X-rays, with lower radiation exposure and enhanced imaging capabilities.
A CT scanner specifically works by rotating an X-ray beam around your body, taking several pictures of the same organ from different angles. The software then processes this data, creating a highly detailed picture of the body’s organs and structure. CT scans particularly diagnose tumours, any internal bleeding after trauma, or damage to organs. Sometimes, patients are given contrast dye to enhance the images and improve diagnostic accuracy.
Contrast is a special dye administered to patients orally or intravenously (via IV) to help visualise organs more clearly. CT scans are completely safe and painless and can help your doctor detect and diagnose your condition early.
CT scan at Al-Nasar Lab & Diagnostic Centre
Al-Nasar Lab & Diagnostic Centre employs a TOSHIBA 128-slice CT scanner. Our modern machine is one of the best in CT imaging technology.
It offers incredible speed and detailed information with reduced exposure to radiation. The CT scan procedure is generally similar for all body parts. Still, it may vary slightly depending on the area being examined. Sometimes, fasting or the use of contrast dye is necessary to improve image quality.
CT scan Procedure
Preparation Before the Test
- Before the test, you will be asked to change into a gown.
- You must fast for several hours before the CT scan with contrast.
- Technologists generally administer contrast dye orally or by IV, depending on the area being examined.
- Above all, you must notify the technologist before the test if you have any specific allergy, particularly to shellfish or iodine.
- Also, inform them if you are expecting.
During the test
- You will be asked to lie on a scanning table that will move into the CT scanner.
- Our technologists will carefully position you based on the specific area being scanned to ensure optimal image quality.
- They will then capture detailed images from multiple angles to ensure accurate visualisation of the targeted area.
- You must remain still during the scan, as motion can blur the images.
- The CT scan procedure takes 15-30 minutes. However, the time may be exceeded if a contrast agent is used or multiple organs need to be scanned.
Results
After the CT scan with contrast, our technologists will closely monitor you for any signs of discomfort or allergic reaction.
Once you feel stable and comfortable, you are free to leave.
The captured images are then carefully reviewed by our technologists, who prepare a detailed diagnostic report for your referring doctor.
