What is a Bone Scan?

A bone scan is a nuclear medicine imaging test to diagnose any clinical condition associated with bones. This scintigraphy bone scan uses radioisotopes that are injected into the bloodstream and gradually absorbed by the bones within 2 to 6 hours. The radioisotope travels through the targeted area and emits gamma rays, which are captured by a specialized gamma camera and processed by a computer to produce detailed images of your bones. By detecting molecular activity at a very early stage, skeletal scintigraphy enables the identification of bone disorders before structural changes become apparent.

A bone scan test diagnoses bone fractures, injuries, tumours, and their location. Bone scans, in particular, also detect the healing of bone after any injury or surgery. The bone scan test is safe, as only a small amount of radiotracer is injected into the body. This tracer leaves the body naturally within 2 to 4 days. It is a safe procedure. However, if you are pregnant, share this with the specialist to avoid complications. This is because the radiation emitted from radiotracer affects the developing fetus or baby.

Bone Scan Procedure with Steps

First, the radiologists inject a small amount of radiotracer into the patient via IV. Rest assured, the procedure is safe— the radiotracer emits significantly less radiation than a standard X-ray.

After that, patients are asked to lie on the scanning table with an empty bladder. A full bladder may distort the bone imaging. Moreover, patients have to lie down still because movement hinders accurate scanning.

The scan generally takes 30 -40 minutes. After scanning, nuclear medicine specialists advise the patients to drink more water. This helps the tracer leave your body naturally.

If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort during the procedure, quickly consult the specialists. It is very rare, but it still can happen.
